Eat Cake

English springer spaniel eat more cake Eat Cake

Comedian Dave Barry said, “My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished 2 bags of M&M’s and a chocolate cake. I feel better already.”

Seriously, who doesn’t feel a little better after a bit of cake?  Eating healthy is important, yes, but too much of anything, including healthy food, can be detrimental to our well being.

Joyful Springers eat cake.  They know it’s important to balance their healthy eating habits with a little bit of fun for their taste buds.

Are you being a little too strict with your diet?  Relax a little.  What you eat isn’t nearly as important as how you feel.  If a strict eating plan is squeezing the fun from your life, find some room in your diet for some treats.

[Ducky sure enjoyed the peanut butter and carrot birthday cake I made for her and her sisters.]

Invite Frolic

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

english springer spaniel invite frolic Invite Frolic

A normal adult day is all about responsible behavior: work, chores, caring for others and/or ourselves, meeting deadlines, paying bills, doing the right thing.  All of this is important, for sure.  But if it’s all we do then we’ve failed to do one of the most important things in life.

Joyful Springers invite frolic.  They know that fun is an essential part of life.  They know that if they don’t feel good, anything else they do won’t be nearly as effective and may in fact be counterproductive.

No matter what you have to do today, even if it’s as serious as a battle with life and death, you must find a place for fun.  Every smile you fit into your day will make you that much stronger and make it that much easier to do whatever serious task you have before you.

Peek Through The Slats

Peek through the slats Murphy and Ollie Lee LInenburg Peek Through The Slats

Sometimes it can feel like what we want is very far away.  Though we used to have a clear vision of our dream, now we can barely see it. When this happens, we have to find a way to get our goal back in focus.

Joyful Springers peek through the slats.  By looking for things to appreciate and things that feel good, they find the path of least resistance to get their focus back on what they want.

When a dream is a long time coming, your disappointment puts you out of vibrational sync with what you want.  Appreciating and doing things that make you feel good help you get in vibrational alignment with your desires again.  Once you’re in alignment, you can put your happy focus back on what you want and watch it appear in your life.

Choose A Fun Pillow

Friday, July 16th, 2010

English springer spaniel choose a fun pillow Choose A Fun Pillow

If you believe the media, we live in a harsh and terrifying reality.  Tragedy and injustice abound.  It’s easy lay awake at night thinking about everything that’s wrong in our world.

But does that really serve us?  No.

An Irish proverb says, “Humor to a man is like a feather pillow. It is filled with what is easy to get but gives great comfort.”

Joyful Springers choose a fun pillow.  They rest in an awareness of the pleasure in the world.  They choose to focus on what makes them laugh, what makes them feel good.

You can put your head on the rocky surface of reality at night, or you can rest your head on the delights of the day.  Before you go to sleep, remember the moments of laughter and fun in your day.  Take those thoughts with you into sleep, and tomorrow you’ll find you’ll have even more happy moments.

[Ducky loves her green Frisbee; it's one of her favorite toys.  So she chose a very fun pillow when she took an afternoon snooze on her bed in our "Fun Room," a spare room we use as a combination music room, reading room, and art studio.]

Cross The Lines

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

english springer spaniel cross the lines Cross The Lines

Okay, so maybe we don’t catch on the first time or the second or the third.  That’s all right.  Learning is a process.

Spiritual teacher David Hawkins said, “All of us must cross the line between ignorance and insight many times before we truly understand.”

Joyful Springers cross the lines.  They don’t let ignorance or inability keep them from having fun.  They just spring into life with eagerness, whether they know what they’re doing or not.

Today, forget what you don’t know.  Think about what you do know, and think about what kind of fun you want to have.  The more you do, the  more you’ll learn, and the better life will be.

[Jackie is back.  Jackie's mummy says Jackie isn't the best catcher in the world.  Recently, though, Jackie's daddy has been taking her to this field with artificial turf. Jackie's mummy says Jackie "is able to remain focused on playing ball better, and even manages to catch a few balls. Mostly, though, she misses." Jackie doesn't seem to care whether she's good at catching or not. Thanks, Jackie, for guest starring again on The Joyful Springer.]

Make A Mess

Monday, June 28th, 2010

english springer spaniel make a mess Make A Mess

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”  Uh, okay.  But relishing the moment is divine.

Joyful Springers make a mess.  They get right into life and enjoy the heck out of it.  They grab hold of fun and rewarding experiences, and they immerse themselves in them, no matter how big of a mess it makes.

Keeping your surroundings and yourself neat is fine, but don’t be so obsessive about it that you miss out on opportunities for carefree joy and passion.

… another wise tidbit from a joyful English Springer Spaniel.

[Ducky delights in bringing in "treasures" from the backyard and tearing them up on the carpet. Could we stop her?  Sure.  But what would be the fun in that?]

Pile On The Toys

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

english springer spaniel pile on the toys Pile On The Toys

You can never, ever surround yourself with too much fun.

Joyful Springers pile on the toys.  They make sure they have access, at all times, to something that makes them smile.

No matter what you’re doing today, be sure you have something nearby that is worth a grin.  It may be a photo of a loved one, it could be a slinky or a stuffed animal or a troll with pink hair.  It doesn’t matter what your “toys” are.  What matters is that they’re nearby and you remember to use them to help you feel good.

… another wise tidbit from a joyful English Springer Spaniel.

[Ducky has too many toys to fit in this basket, so she keeps some in each room of the house.]

Emulate When It Feels Good

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

english springer spaniel emulate when it feels good Emulate When It Feels Good

Just because someone else is doing it doesn’t mean you have to do it too.  Keeping up with the Joneses is a waste of time if you’re doing it to impress others.  The only reason to copy someone else is if what they’re doing looks like it would feel great.

Joyful Springers emulate when it feels good.  They have a radar for fun and comfort, and they copy those who’ve figured out how to HAVE fun and comfort.

Develop a sort of “happy copy” radar today.  Pay attention to those who look like they’re having a blast and see if you can be like they are. Emulating can be a great way to improve your life when what you’re emulating comes from joy.

Dip In Chocolate

Monday, June 21st, 2010

english springer spaniel dip in chocolate Dip In Chocolate

Peanuts creator Charles M. Schultz said, “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

Chocolate is a comforter.  It both soothes and invigorates.  It’s a source of pleasure.

Joyful Springers dip in chocolate.  They find ways to wade through pleasure and comfort as much as possible.

Look for some little treat  today.  You deserve to feel great, no matter what’s going on.

… another wise tidbit from a joyful English Springer Spaniel.

[No, that's not really chocolate--it's mud.  But maybe someday, chocolate Springers could replace chocolate bunnies. Or not.  Nikki is back.  Woodridge's the Divine Miss N (Nikki) was one of Sam I Am's pups.  Sam I Am was Sally and Warren Wattenbarger's (Ducky's wonderful breeders) beloved girl. Nikki passed away, at only 18 months, from cancer in 1999.  The Wattenbargers have a lovely memorial to this special girl in their home. Nikkie will be forever in the hearts of those who loved her. Thanks, Nikkie, for guest starring again on The Joyful Springer.]

Be A Goofball

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

english springer spaniel be a goofball Be A Goofball

There is one sure way of having a blast everyday.  Get a little goofy.

Joyful Springers know how to be goofballs.  They embrace their silly side.

Serious is necessary in some situations, but there’s more energy in goofiness than there is in rigid control. Get a little wild today.  You may be surprised at how much better your whole day goes if you do.

… another wise tidbit from a joyful English Springer Spaniel.

[Jackie is back.  Jackie's mummy says Jackie's older sister, Bonnie, who passed away two years ago, left sweet Jackie playing the role of "the dim bulb of the family." It looks like it's a role Jackie has a lot of fun with.   Thanks, Jackie, for guest starring again on The Joyful Springer.]
