Carry A Walking Stick

Carry a walking stick Ducky Carry A Walking Stick

When we’re walking through life, anything that gives us a sense of stability is a good thing.

Joyful Springers carry a walking stick.  They find something that gives them comfort, and they keep it with them to help them feel secure in a sometimes crazy world.

A “walking stick” can be anything that gives you sense of peace–a cross, a memento from a precious time in your life, a photograph, a special token,or maybe even something more literal like a can of mace icon wink Carry A Walking Stick .  Walking through life goes easier when you carry something that helps you feel safe.

[Not only is Ducky carrying a nice walking stick in this photo, she's also sporting what we call her "Commando Ducky outfit."  icon smile Carry A Walking Stick   It's actually a brace for her injured leg, but calling it a commando outfit is more fun.

Ducky has been on quite a journey this year.  In February, she injured her back left leg, and after a few periods of rest following a return of lameness, we finally determined that she had a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).  We gave up on short periods of rest, and in May, we made the decision to rest her for several weeks in the hope that she could heal without the need for painful surgery.  Can you imagine keeping a two-year old Springer still for 2 months?  Ducky was on a leash all the time, even in the house.  We created ramps to all our furniture, and we did our best to amuse her with games she could play while lying down.  Finally, we started taking her on short leash walks to build up her strength, but we were limited to twenty minute or shorter walks.  After extensive research, I found a wonderful canine ACL brace at WoundWear.   It cost $350 we didn't have, so we had to borrow the money, but it was well worth it!   (If you'd like to make a donation to the site to help us pay off the Commando Ducky brace icon wink Carry A Walking Stick , Ducky says she'll wag her tail profusely in your honor!!!  Click here to make a donation.)  NOTE:  If the donation links don't work, look to the right of this site, at the picture of Ducky that says, "I pose for treats. Donate to my treat fund?"  Click on that picture and it should take you to the Paypal donation page.  Thanks!!

Because of the brace, Ducky is now up to two hours of on-leash walking a day, and she's walking with a normal gait.  We take the first walk on the beach, and then two more walks around our neighborhood. When we walk in the neighborhood, Ducky carries a stick--the same stick on every walk.  She found the stick in our driveway a couple months ago.  She carries it for the whole walk, brings it back and puts it on the garage floor, and then picks it up again when we head back out for another walk.

Ducky is looking forward to when she's healed enough to run again, but in the meantime, she's prancing happily with her walking stick.  icon smile Carry A Walking Stick ]

Slacken Your Leash

Discipline has a place in life.  But it can get out of hand.  Some people have their lives so orchestrated and regimented that they’re tied up all day long.

Joyful Springers slacken their leash.  They have some order in their lives, but they partner that order with laid-back freedom to just be.

Unleash yourself from the constraints of constant doing.  Enjoy joyful moments of being.

Arm Yourself

Life will bring you conflict.  There’s no getting around that.  But you can prepare yourself for any conflict you may encounter.

Joyful Springers arm themselves.  They understand that developing a “weapon” of peacefulness and positive expectation will give them protection that feels just like being wrapped in the strong arm of a loving daddy.

When you decide to be a peaceful, positive person, you are always well-armed for any struggle.

Open Up To Peace

english springer spaniel open up to peace Open Up To Peace

We think that peace is something that happens outside of us. But that’s not true.

Joyful Springers open up to peace.  They understand that peace is something they invite into their lives from the inside.  They focus on peace, so peace fills their lives.

If you want peace, be it.  Start by finding peace in your heart, and you’ll open yourself to peace in your world.

Get Easy

english springer spaniel get easy Get Easy

We are a society of action.  We are doers.  We like to be productive.

Some action is great, but not all action is created equal. Action taken out of desperation never leads anyplace good.

Joyful Springers get easy.  They don’t take action until they’ve made peace with where they are now.

Before you charge into some course of action designed to “fix” something, stop a moment and ask yourself if you’re missing a step.  Have you accepted what is?  Take a breath and allow the way things are to be okay.  Then, from that more relaxed place, take action.  You’ll find that your action is far more effective when you find acceptance first.

Get Stuffed, Not Stressed

image NOT YET Get Stuffed, Not Stressed

According to a survey done by British hotel chain, Travelodge, one in four men travel with a stuffed animal and 35 percent of adults sleep with a stuffed animal.  Why have stuffed toys made their way into adult life?  Because, say the men and woman who sleep or travel with stuffed bears, dogs, and other animals, the critters are calming.

Joyful Springers get stuffed, not stressed.  They know that keeping a cuddly toy nearby is a great way to let go of anxiety and allow in peace.

If you have secretly tucked a stuffed toy in luggage or are afraid someone will find out you sleep with a teddy, you can come out of the stuffed toy closet.  Be proud of your healthy way of taking care of yourself.  If you don’t have a stuffed animal nearby, think about getting one.  They’re remarkably soothing and are always good for a smile.

[Muggins liked to keep her stuffed toys close.  This one, a goose, was one of her favorites. ...  And for the record, I proudly announce that I own at least a hundred stuffed animals and sleep with one named Roni (he is the "son" of two large stuffed animals named Rosie and Bernie).]

Have An Armchair Attitude

english springer spaniel have an armchair attitude Have An Armchair Attitude

Artist Henri Matisse said, “What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter – a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.”

Ahh.  Doesn’t that sound great?  So how do you get that kind of calm?  You deliberately choose thoughts that create it.

Joyful Springers have an armchair attitude.  They know they’re in charge of their own brains, and they’re careful to choose thoughts that bring them peace rather than stress and worry.

Ninety-nine percent of what you worry about will never happen.  So why put yourself through all that?  Look for reasons to feel peaceful and keep those thoughts at the forefront of your mind.  It will feel like you’re riding through life in a floating armchair when you take control of your own mind.

Leave Room For A Ball

english springer spaniel leave room for a ball Leave Room For A Ball

Most of us think too much.  We ponder and wonder and worry and plan.  We think and think and think.  In all that brain clutter, it’s awfully tough to find a brilliant idea or a sensation of peace.

Author Leo Tolstoy wrote,“You can’t imagine what a pleasure this complete laziness is to me: not a thought in my brain- you might send a ball rolling through it!”

Joyful Springers leave room for a ball.  They know how to let go of all their swirling thoughts and clear their minds.

If you let the clatter in your head rule your life, you’re going to miss out on an awful lot of beautiful now moments.  Find a way to diminish that cacophony today.  Meditate.  Watch your child or your pet sleep.  Stare out a window and wipe your worries away.  Make a space for a ball of pure joy to go rolling through your mind.

… another wise tidbit from a joyful English Springer Spaniel.

[Jackie is back.  Even though this pretty girl isn't great at catching the ball, she loves to hang onto it. Thanks, Jackie, for guest starring again on The Joyful Springer.]

Partner Up

english springer spaniel partner up Partner Up

Nelsen Mandela said, “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”

Pushing against people doesn’t get you anywhere.  Only cooperation creates forward progress.

Joyful Springers partner up.  They know they must find a way to be in harmony with those around them.

Everything and everyone in our world is connected.  If you make an enemy of another, you make an enemy of yourself.  If you’re harboring a grudge against someone, let it go today. Turn your enemies into partners.
