Most of us have a tendency to live life by the seat of our pants. Instead of acting, we keep reacting.

Joyful Springers calculate. They have a deliberate purpose or design for their life because they know by having one, they’re more likely to take the actions that will give them the life they want.

When you think about what you want from your days instead of just going through the motions, you’re giving your subconscious mind (which runs most of your life) instructions to create what you want to experience. Having your subconscious on board makes the ride of your life a lot more joyful.

[Meet Punky. Helen Gibson sent me this photo of the third Springer who came into her life. Helen says, "She was quite the math whiz ... as you can see!" Punky passed away in 2007 at the age of 13, but the love and joy she brought to the Gibson family lives on. Thanks, Punky, for being a Guest Star on The Joyful Springer.]

Touch The Truth Of The Trunk

Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu wrote, “A tree trunk the size of a man grows from a blade as thin as a hair. A tower nine stories high is built from a small heap of earth.”

Joyful Springers touch the truth of the trunk. They know that even if all they have now is a whisper of an idea or desire, that whisper can crescendo into the symphony of full creation.

Sometimes when our notions are nothing more than a murmur in our thoughts, it’s tempting to dismiss them as “pie in the sky” “impossible dreams.” But every magnificent success starts as one of those insignificant murmurs. When you live each day in awareness that your little thoughts can grow into big experiences, you get in touch with a power of creation that will help you achieve great things.

Look For Clues

We’re in the habit of mindless observing whatever we happen to see. But there’s a more productive … and more fun … way of viewing the world.

Joyful Springers look for clues. They decide what they want in their lives and they consciously look for things that are similar to what they want.

Instead of being a passive watcher in the world, be a seeker of what you want to experience. When you deliberately set out to see things you desire, like examples of love and health and abundance, you create a force of energy that can, over time, pull more of these things into your world.

[Pringles is back. Joan Howe made the cape that her beloved tri-color Springer, who passed away in 2009, is wearing in this photo. The hat was specially made from a San Francisco hat store, and the pipe came from a costume shop. Is Pringles the cutest Sherlock Holmes you've ever seen or what? ]

Require Shades

Singing group Timbuk 3 sang, “My future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.”

Joyful Springers require shades. They expect wonderful things to come their way. They see a future that meets all their desires.

The future will match your perspective of it. If you see it as dark and foreboding, it will be. If you see it flaring into a supernova of delightful experiences, it will be so bright that you’ll need shades.

Catherine said these North Carolina girls are wearing their signature colors here: Sidney (red), Betsy (lavender) and Wallis (pink). And don't they look lovely? ]

Take The Wheel

How much of your day do you spend trying to control the people around you? Think about it … and be honest. Most of us either consciously or unconsciously attempt to get others to do what we want.

Joyful Springers take the wheel. They don’t bother trying to get others to go in the direction they want. They take charge of their own lives by putting their energy and focus on themselves.

When you keep your focus on your thought, your opinion, your intuition, and your actions, you have the ultimate control to design a life you want.

Cuddle Your Teddy Bear

Inside each and every one of us is a big ol’ teddy bear–a part of us that’s soft, lovable, and quite fond of hugs.

Joyful Springers cuddle their inner teddy bear. They embrace the soft, cushy part of themselves, even though they know it makes them vulnerable.

If you feel like you need to be tough to make it in your career or relationships, think again. Strong is one thing. Tough is another. You can be strong and approachably lovable at the same time. Own that part of you that’s as cuddly as a teddy, and you’ll find people opening up to you in ways they never have before.

Rub Against It

Did you know that we tend to live up to, or down to, those with whom we keep company? Studies have shown that our income is generally in the same range as those of the people we interact with. The same goes for intelligence, happiness, and many core qualities and values.

Joyful Springers rub against it. They know that if they want to change some circumstance in their life or some inner quality, they need to seek out others who have what they want.

If you’re dissatisfied with some part of your life, look at the people in your life and see if they’re reflecting similar circumstances or qualities. They probably are. Make it a priority to making connections with people who embody the experiences and qualities you want, and your own experience will begin to change.

Seek Out The Purity

Buddha said, “We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.”

Joyful Springers seek out the purity. They deliberately choose positive, loving thoughts.

If you would like your life to be as lovely and fresh as a new snowfall and it’s more dark and murky like a swamp, take a look at your thoughts. What are you focused on? Are you worried? Are you fretting? Are you grousing? You can choose today to begin shifting your thoughts to ones that create joy.

Wear A Security Blanket

The world can feel like a scary place, but it doesn’t have to be one.

Joyful Springers wear a security blanket. They know that their positive thought and focus attracts to them wonderful experiences. When they look for the safety and the happiness in the world, they are safe and happy.

You can’t control everything that goes on around you by protesting this or lamenting that. But you can control what happens to you by controlling where you put your attention. The more you relish the safe, happy moments, the more those moments will expand to become a lifetime of joy.

We tend to go through life thinking things just happen to us. We think we have no control over any of it. But that’s not true.

Joyful Springers take the driver’s seat. They understand that their deliberate focus on thoughts that feel good creates their reality. They’re in control of their life experience, and they know it.

You don’t have to let life knock you around. Your mind is your steering wheel. Point it in the direction you want to go, and keep your eyes on the road ahead.
